A leaked US State Department document obtained by Politico suggests that President Donald Trump’s administration is debating whether to call the slaughter of Rohinya Muslims in Myanmar last year as a genocide following a revelation that the country’s military had exhibited “premeditation and coordination” prior to the slaughter. The United States called the Myanmar military operation against the Rohingya population “ethnic cleansing” in November and threatened targeted sanctions against those responsible for what it called “horrendous atrocities”, The Guardian reports. The United Nations human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein has said an act of genocide against Rohingya Muslims by state forces in Myanmar cannot be ruled out. Until now, UN officials have described the violence in northern Rakhine state as “textbook ethnic cleansing”.
