Japan is beefing up its military and diplomatic presence in Southeast Asia by sending an extra defence attaché to its embassy in Kuala Lumpur, adding to military officers sent to embassies in the Philippines and Vietnam last year, reports Julian Ryall for South China Morning Post. In June, Southeast Asian military officers embarked on a four-day tour of the South China Sea on the Japanese navy’s Izumo helicopter carrier as Japan was stepping up efforts to counter growing Chinese influence. The move was part of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s push to bolster Japan’s military role and its sales of defence equipment, especially in Southeast Asia, where China has expanded its own arms sales.
