Recently, The Straits Times reported that former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad urged Malaysia to claim Singapore and the Riau Islands as these territories are Malay lands. He was reported to have made such remarks in his speech during the Malay Survival Congress on June 19 in Selangor. In addition, Mahathir contended that Malaysia was contented to win control over Sipadan and Ligitan from Indonesia while giving up a piece of rock — “Pedra Branca” — to Singapore.
