In his inaugural address on 20 October, Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia’s third directly-elected president, declared his intention to alleviate poverty and bolster Indonesia’s economic sovereignty while upholding non-alignment in foreign policy.  His initial cabinet picks reveals a tendency towards rewarding loyal supporters, with a key exception in the retention of finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati whose continued presence will provide reassurance to financial markets. The limited representation of women and rewarding of Islamic organizations, big businesses and the military has raised doubts about his team’s appetite for reform and its ability to achieve Prabowo’s lofty goals of 8 per cent growth.
