A submarine belonging to the Indonesian Navy went missing off Bali Island early on Wednesday, the military commander said. The search and rescue operation is underway with the military expecting assistance from neighboring Singapore and Australia, Indonesian Military Commander Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto said in Jakarta. “The search is underway in an area 60 miles [96 kilometers] from Bali,” Hadi said. The missing KRI Nanggala-402 submarine — one of only five submarines currently in service with the Indonesian Military — was bought from Germany in 1981. Hadi said the submarine made its last contact at around 4.30 a.m.  “We lost contact with the submarine not long after it was given clearance to dive,” Hadi said.
