The hunt is on for a kidnap-for-ransom group who are believed to have abducted three Indonesian fishermen in waters off Semporna District in Sabah, Malaysia, during curfew hours at about 1am Tuesday, The Star reports. Previously in May, the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery issued a warning about impending pirate attacks off Sabah by members of the Abu Sayyaf group, a terrorist organization with a history of maritime hijacking and kidnappings. A maze of islands and the labyrinthine links between the sea waters in Southeast Asia provide protection to the pirates. The countries in the region, with their naval police units, are weak and corrupt to deal with the situation, according to Germany’s public broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
