Indonesia has welcomed France’s recognition of a Palestinian state, while reaffirming its support for a two-state solution to end the longstanding conflict between Israel and Palestine. In a statement posted on X on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry said Indonesia welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron’s decision, calling it a “positive path to preserve the future prospect of a sovereign and independent state of Palestine”. The ministry also urged all countries to follow France’s path in recognizing Palestinian statehood. On Thursday, Macron announced on X that France would formally recognize a Palestinian state during the coming United Nations General Assembly in September, stressing that ending the war in Gaza remained a top priority for the country. “True to its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize a state of Palestine,” he said, while also calling for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages and the delivery of humanitarian aid. France, home to the largest Jewish and Muslim communities in Europe, would become the first major Western country, and the first among wealthy nations of the Group of Seven (G7) to officially recognize Palestine. To date, at least 142 of the 193 United Nations member states have recognized Palestinian statehood, according to an AFP tally. Macron’s announcement was swiftly condemned by the United States, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio on X calling it “a reckless decision that only serves Hamas propaganda and sets back peace”. Indonesia recognized Palestine in 1988, not long after Palestine declared its independence. Jakarta has consistently reaffirmed its support for Palestinian people across international forums, including when Foreign Minister Sugiono presented a statement for an advisory case on Gaza at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in April.
