The unified Korean women’s basketball team has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 18th Asian Games, after defeating Kazakhstan 85-57 on Tuesday (21/08).

North Korean center Ro Suk-yong led with 19 points in the 11-member team, followed by South Korean player Park Hye-jin, who scored 13.

The team comprises nine South Korean and three North Korean players.

Their 12th member, Park Ji-su, is expected to join them in time for the quarterfinals, as her Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) season with Las Vegas Aces in the United States has just ended, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

Tuesday’s win marks the joint team’s third at the Asian Games this year. The two Koreas defeated Indonesia 108-40 last week and India 104-54 on Monday.

The quarterfinals will take place on Sunday in Jakarta.

The two Koreas marched together behind the “unification” flag at the opening ceremony of the Asian Games on Saturday.

They are competing together as a team in women’s basketball, rowing and canoeing.

The unified Korean rowing team in the lightweight men’s four competition advanced to the finals on Tuesday, and will compete against China, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, India and Hong Kong later this week.
