The National Police have extended the Cartenz Peace Operation to maintain security and stability in Papua until the end of 2024. National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Erdi A. Chaniago said this year’s operation, which started on Jan. 1, prioritized humanistic and persuasive approaches, just like those implemented during operation in 2023. “The Cartenz Peace Operation prioritizes community development functions, detection and community relations supported by law enforcement task forces,” he said on Wednesday, as quoted by the Antara news agency. Erdi further said that the operation was being carried out within Papua Police jurisdiction, with priority targets, especially in the newly created Central Papua and Papua Highlands provinces, covering a total of nine regencies. The priority target regencies are Dogiyai, Intan Jaya, Mimika and Puncak regencies in Central Papua, Jayawijaya, Nduga, Pegunungan Bintang and Yahukimo regencies in Papua Highlands and Jayapura in Papua. The Papua Police also cover the newly created South Papua province. During a year-end release on Dec. 12, National Police chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo said that the Cartenz Peace Operation in 2023 involved 777 National Police officers and 131 personnel from the Indonesian Military (TNI). Listyo said that the Cartenz Peace Operation used a hard approach, prioritizing human rights to address disturbances caused by armed criminal groups (KKB) and their networks. Throughout 2023, the operation incapacitated 19 members of a KKB, with legal enforcement actions taken against 124 individuals, of which 25 reached the P-21 stage (complete case files), 34 were under investigation and 65 were in the preliminary investigation stage.
