Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung attended the opening of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Monday. He was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister, Arrmanatha Nasir.
This moment marked a historic milestone, as it was the first time Jakarta had been officially invited by the United Nations to participate in the global forum focused on the direction of sustainable development worldwide. The HLPF is a strategic platform that brings together world leaders, diplomats, and subnational government leaders to assess progress and challenges in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Jakarta’s presence at the forum reflects international recognition of the city’s transformation into an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable global urban center. In his speech, Governor Pramono stressed the importance of inter-city and cross-country cooperation in addressing challenges such as urbanization, climate change, and social inequality. “Jakarta is no longer just an administrative capital, it is rising to become a global city. Therefore, it is essential for us to engage actively in global diplomacy. We are driving a transition to clean energy, digitalizing public services, and building a green, community-based economy,” Pramono said. He further emphasized that Jakarta’s participation in the forum aligns with its role as an ASEAN Hub, positioning the city as a center for cooperation and innovation in Southeast Asia. Arrmanatha Nasir said the involvement of regional leaders such as the Jakarta governor in international forums is proof that Indonesia’s diplomacy now includes multiple levels of government. HLPF 2025 is being held from July 14 to 23, under the theme: “Advancing Sustainable, Inclusive and Evidence-Based Solutions for the 2030 Agenda with No One Left Behind.” A total of 37 countries, including Indonesia, are presenting Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs), which highlight achievements, challenges, and best practices in implementing the SDGs across sectors and levels of government.
