Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia on Wednesday inaugurated several strategic electricity projects aimed at achieving the country’s target of a 100 percent electrification rate. Some of these projects are also part of the government’s broader effort to advance state-owned electricity company PLN’s de-dieselization program. Among the key initiatives is the Anggi Micro-Hydro Power Plant Phase II project, with a capacity of 2 x 250 kilowatts (kW) in Arfak Mountains regency, West Papua, which broke ground on Wednesday. “[The project] will enable 2,700 customers, who previously relied on diesel for just six hours of daily electricity, to access 24-hour power entirely from renewable sources,” energy ministry renewables director general Eniya Listiani Dewi said in a live broadcast. The regency had previously depended on PLN’s diesel-powered plants, making its electricity supply highly vulnerable to the availability and cost of diesel. The transition began in March 2023, when the Anggi Micro-Hydro Power Plant Phase I project in the Enggimun River Basin, with a capacity of 1 x 150 kW, commenced operation. The additional capacity provided by Phase II will further reduce diesel consumption in isolated power systems across the Arfak Mountains, which are planned to be integrated with the main Arfak Mountains grid, namely the Sururey, Demaisi, Taige, Catubouw, Menyambouw, Hink and Anggi Gida systems. PLN estimates potential annual fuel savings of Rp 6.7 billion (US$400,000) from the new power plant, bringing total savings from diesel-fired plants to Rp 17 billion since 2023. The Anggi Micro-Hydro Power Plant is managed through an operational handover mechanism between the Arfak Mountains regional administration and PLN UIW Papua and West Papua. Read more at:
