The eldest son of Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen was promoted Thursday to commander of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, the second most powerful position in the country’s military, the Associated Press reports. Yesterday, Cambodia’s new parliament met for the first time, launching an era of one-party rule after an uncontested election handed the ruling party of strongman Hun Sen all 125 seats in last July. King Norodom Sihamoni used the opening of parliament on Wednesday morning to call for “strong national solidarity based on the spirit of national unity”. Nine of the 31 missions invited did not send their ambassadors, with Australia saying on Tuesday it would not be represented due to the “flawed election process”.
