PHILIPPINES
Manila Bulletin-May 17
At the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, President Duterte has encouraged the Muslim community to continue to do good deeds for the poor and foster solidarity among all Filipinos.
The President made the appeal as he joined the Muslim brothers and sisters in this time of “devotion and contemplation” during the Ramadan.
“As we set forth into an era of change, one must make sacrifices not only to overcome personal difficulties but also to create meaningful and lasting strides in our communities,” Duterte said in his message.
“By demonstrating the noble teachings of Islam, it is my fervent hope that you continue to do good deeds for the poor and the marginalized members of the society. I ask that you foster a sense of solidarity among all Filipinos by manifesting faith through action,” he added.
“Let us join hands in the shared task of nation-building as we make the Philippines a more inclusive, peaceful and united country in the years to come,” Duterte said.
The President also said he wishes peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah to the Muslim community on the occasion of Ramadan.
He said Ramadan was a time of reflection on the principles in the Qur’an and how these relate to their thought and actions as Muslims.
“Through fasting and prayer, this significant event reveals to them the will of Allah and reaffirms their resolve to achieve spiritual cleansing and growth,” he said.
