China-backed projects in Malaysia were heavily criticised by Pakatan Harapan (PH) during the May 9 election campaign but it places no fault on Beijing for greenlighting these deals with the ousted Barisan Nasional (BN) government, The Straits Times reports, quoting Malaysia’s new foreign minister. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad will visit Beijing in August—no specific dates yet—to discuss project negotiations to win deals that he says should be more favourable to Malaysia. Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) chairman Tun Daim Zainuddin was in China to try to renegotiate contracts with Chinese firms entered into by the previous government, said Mahathir, as quoted by The Edge Markets. Daim was quoted as saying that Mahathir understands China and has been proactively developing Malaysia’s relationship with that country.
