Generational shift is no easy feat, either with the succession by princelings or non-princelings. Singapore’s case offered an example of leadership shift by non-princeling. The expected candidate of future prime minister, Heng Swee Keat, needed to give up the position citing health concern. Japan’s case offered an example of leadership shift by princeling. In this case, former prime minister Shinzo Abe needed to give up his first premiership for health concern and he did come back again to the premiership, but the latter with more resilience.
