According to Thai media reports, Thai defense minister Nattaphon Narkphaniting has declared that Thailand will not proceed with discussions on the release of 18 captured soldiers unless Cambodia returns control of Oddar Meanchey province’s Ta Krabei Temple, known as Prasat Ta Kwai in Thai. “The issue will not be resolved until Prasat Ta Kwai is returned to Thailand,” Nattaphon told a press conference. He said the Thai Cabinet has yet to formally discuss the matter, but insisted that the temple remains Thai territory and affirmed that no negotiations beyond the detainees’ release will take place until the temple dispute is settled. His comments suggest further rifts between the Thai government and its military. Thailand has also accused Cambodia of violating the Geneva Conventions by deploying troops and laying landmines at the site. Thai media reported that Nattaphon stated that these acts breached international law and that Thailand “will not accept Cambodia’s control over Prasat Ta Kwai”. The detention of the 18 soldiers has drawn regional attention, particularly after international observers, including US President Donald Trump, US state department officials and the ASEAN chair anticipated their immediate release following the October 26 peace agreement.
