The Royal Government of Cambodia has lodged a formal protest against Thailand following the unauthorized presence of Thai naval vessels and the “unlawful exercise” of law enforcement within Cambodian waters, officials said yesterday. According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the incident happened yesterday. Thai naval vessels allegedly intercepted a local vessel and arrested three Cambodian nationals around 7.2 nautical miles from Koh Yor, located in Cambodia’s Koh Kong province. The Ministry described the maneuvers as a “clear violation” of national sovereignty and international law. In a diplomatic note, Phnom Penh demanded the immediate release of the detained fishers and the return of their seized equipment. The Gulf of Thailand has long been a site of overlapping claims, though both nations have recently sought to maintain stability through bilateral maritime cooperation.
