The Ministry of Rural Development is set to select an additional 250 villages across Cambodia to transform into model villages, with the aim to enhance infrastructure and stimulate economic growth in rural areas. During a recent forum titled ‘What is Rural Development in Cambodia?’ Minister of Rural Development Chhay Rithisen announced the plan, emphasizing the goal of fostering economic progress and improving living standards in these communities. Cambodia currently has 30 model villages located in Takeo, Kampong Speu and Tboung Khmum provinces. The model village initiative aims to boost each family’s economic status through skills training and access to credit for large-scale agriculture. These villages also benefit from improved infrastructure, including roads and clean water supplies, fostering a sense of community and ownership among residents. Rithisen said, “By the end of the 7th mandate in 2028, we plan to create 250 more model villages, at a rate of 50 villages per year. We are preparing documentation to assess the progress and development levels of various villages to streamline our efforts.” The Ministry will evaluate the geographical and economic conditions of potential villages, particularly those near markets for agricultural products, and the willingness of residents to engage in community development. Each model village will have a ‘Village Development Committee’ responsible for leading, coordinating, and presenting annual development plans. Additional efforts include constructing model kindergartens and schools and promoting security and order. Oeun Thearith, director of the Community Development Department, said that the existing model villages have significantly developed due to credit support projects. Some villages have received up to $10,000 in low-interest loans, facilitating substantial progress.
