Cambodia marked a significant milestone in its energy transition yesterday with the groundbreaking of a $1.34 billion gas-fired power plant in Koh Kong province, poised to become the nation’s largest power-generation facility. The groundbreaking ceremony, hosted by the Royal Group of Companies, unveiled the country’s first-ever gas-fired plant, located in Thmor Sor commune, Botum Sakor district. The project is part of Cambodia’s fast-track energy initiatives, approved by the government in late September, and is fully owned by the Royal Group. The total investment value is $1,341,89 million. The event yesterday was presided over by Minister of Mines and Energy Keo Rottanak, Neak Oknha Kith Meng, Chairman & CEO of The Royal Group, and Koh Kong provincial governor Mithona Phuthong.  In his remarks, Rottanak highlighted Cambodia’s ambition to attain upper-middle-income status by 2030 and achieve high-income country status by 2050.  This 900MW plant, operating under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model in collaboration with the Ministry of Mines and Energy and Electricité du Cambodge (EdC), is expected to transform the country’s energy landscape.
