Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen has called for a halt to the purchase of strategic goods from Thailand, such as electricity, internet services, fuel, and gas and also instructed that all Thai dramas and content be suspended from broadcast within Cambodia. Samdech Techo Hun Sen spoke on Thursday (Jul. 3) during a meeting with students and teachers at the Chea Sim Komchaymear Education and Training Centre in Prey Veng province. “Cambodia must exercise caution and avoid purchasing anything of strategic goods from Thailand. First, electricity. Under no circumstances should we buy it. Second, internet. Third, fuel and gas. Because once they cut those off, we’re done,” Samdech Techo underscored. Samdech Techo further explained that Thailand’s threats against Cambodia are not new. During a past border conflict between the two countries, Thailand had also issued threats. It was for this reason that National Road 68 was funded using Cambodia’s national budget, as Thailand had threatened to cut its financial assistance. Additionally, Samdech Techo stated that the broadcasting of all Thai dramas must be completely stopped. Once this is done, Cambodians should redirect their support toward local film productions.
