Speaking at a press conference during the Health Conference on Monday, Minister of Health Chheang Ra said the ministry has worked for more than a decade to prevent, control, and eliminate malaria. He added that 2025 was set as the final year for eliminating the vector-borne disease under the national plan. However, the minister cautioned that elimination does not mean malaria will never reappear. The country may come across imported cases due to cross-border movement, business travel, or tourism, which is a global challenge even in countries that have eliminated the disease. Ministry of Health Secretary of State Lo Veasnakiry, said that the national goal of eliminating malaria by 2025 has been achieved. Director of the National Center for Malaria, Parasitology and Epidemiology Huy Rekol, said malaria elimination has been a long-term national priority, with Cambodia achieving key milestones such as overcoming artemisinin resistance by 2015, and ending malaria-related deaths by 2018.
