The 2025 World Population Review has ranked Cambodia’s education 120th globally amongst the 203 countries on the list and is the lowest in ASEAN, highlighting ongoing challenges in the nation’s education system. According to the education rankings, Singapore tops the list for ASEAN countries followed by Brunei, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, and last is Cambodia. South Korea tops the rankings, followed by Denmark and the Netherlands. The education rankings are sourced from the annual United Nations (UN) News Best Countries report and the nonprofit organization World Top 20. While Cambodia’s education ranking stands at 120, the literacy rate is 84%, according to the Socio-Economic Survey 2019-2020, in 2020, from the age of 15 up was 87.8%, an increase from 77.6% in 2008. Spokeswoman for the Ministry of Education Khuon Vichheka wouldn’t comment on the report, citing the need for a detailed review of the methodology and data used in the assessment. Dr Quach Mengly, a renowned education specialist, said yesterday that if compared to the education sector several years ago, Cambodia has improved. However, in terms of the current situation, Cambodia is progressing slowly due to modernization and the rapid advancement of technology.
“When comparing the present state of modernization and technological progress, other countries are also moving forward, while Cambodia lags significantly behind. If we compare our pace with the evolving global landscape, we are moving slowly. However, compared to 10 to 20 years ago, we were progressing at a faster rate,” he added. Dr Mengly emphasized that Cambodia lacks Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other technology as well as STEM education, which prevents the country from keeping up with other nations. Read more at:
