Jakarta’s former governor, a Christian convicted of insulting Islam, sought a judicial review of his case on Monday, as several hundred of his supporters and hardline Islamist protesters gathered outside a court in the Indonesian capital. The preliminary hearing of the petition, which lasted only 10 minutes, was held at the North Jakarta District Court on Monday. The Supreme Court justices will later decide whether or not to grant his case review petition. The ethnic Chinese Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, nicknamed “Ahok”, was sentenced to two years in prison for blasphemy in 2017, provoking accusations of political motivation after Muslims rallied in hundreds of thousands demanding his imprisonment. The blasphemy case was also instrumental in causing Ahok’s defeat in the April 19 gubernatorial election.
