Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen has taken a defiant stance following a European Union (EU) announcement last week that it would ramp up trade pressure on Cambodia over human rights concerns, Reuters reports. The EU told Cambodia on Friday it will lose its special access to the world’s largest trading bloc, and said it was considering similar trade sanctions for Myanmar in a toughening of EU policy on human rights in Southeast Asia. Hun Sen won a landslide election victory in July, a result that was seen as a foregone conclusion after months-long brutal crackdown destroyed all opposition. Over the past year, Hun Sen, a former Khmer Rouge general, systematically destroyed all form of political opposition, The Guardian reports.
