Controversial businessman Low Taek Jho, said to be living abroad, reached out to Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad after he was sworn in last month to offer his assistance on matters related to the scandal surrounding the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) sovereign wealth fund, The Straits Times reports. Malaysia is considering asking the US Department of Justice (DoJ) to get Goldman Sachs to return nearly US$600 million in fees it earned from bonds raised for 1MDB, two sources familiar with the matter said, as quoted by The Star Online. Malaysia’s newly appointed Attorney-General Tommy Thomas said last week that there would be “no cover-ups” as he promised to institute criminal and civil action over a graft scandal at the state fund. At least six countries, including the United States, Singapore and Switzerland, are investigating claims that $4.5 billion was siphoned out of 1MDB, founded by former premier Najib Razak.
