US President Donald Trump is enabling the continuation of human rights abuses in the country through its muted voice on the issue in the Philippines, according to Human Rights Watch. This trend is not just seen in the Trump administration’s treatment of the mounting cases of alleged extrajudicial killings in the country, according John Sifton, the Asia Advocacy Director at HRW. Amid criticism of his drug war from human rights groups, President Rodrigo Duterte said in August that he might just order police to shoot them so they would know what real human rights violations are like. Since taking office on June 30, 2016, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has carried out a “war on drugs” that has led to the deaths of over 7,000 Filipinos to date, mostly urban poor.
