Indonesia’s General Elections Commission (KPU) have declared that 14 political parties will participate in next year’s legislative and presidential elections, with the addition of four new contenders, which include the Working Party (Berkarya). It was established in 2016 and initiated by Tommy Suharto, the youngest son of former President Suharto. In 2002, Tommy was convicted of masterminding the murder of the judge who sentenced him to prison for corruption in 2000. A panel of five judges sentenced him to 15 years in prison. His father, President Soeharto ruled Indonesia for 32 years and was known for his repressive ruled and authoritarian regime. His political career ended in May 1998. The killing of six students by security forces at Trisakti University on May 12 triggered a revulsion to which even Suharto had to yield.
