PHILIPPINE LAWMAKER WANTS TO HONOR SOUTH CHINA SEA RULING

A Philippine lawmaker has proposed a bill to honor an international court’s ruling in favor of Manila in its maritime dispute with Beijing in the South China Sea, saying the move would boost national pride, South China Morning Post reports. The lawmaker, Gary C. Alejano is a former Marine captain and fierce critic of President Rodrigo Duterte. Armed conflict over territorial disputes in the South China Sea could be one of the major crises for US President Donald Trump’s administration in 2019, according to an annual survey that identifies top flashpoints for US policymakers to watch in the year to come. Indonesia this week opened a military base with over 1,000 personnel on a remote island at the southern edge of the disputed South China Sea, most of which is claimed by China.
