The leader of Malaysia’s biggest pro-democracy group, Bersih, which means “clean” in Malaysian language, said on Tuesday she will stand for parliament in a general election under the banner of an opposition alliance. Maria Chin Abdullah was quoted as saying in a message to the media that she would be a candidate under the four-party opposition alliance Pakatan Harapan, led by former Premier Mahathir Mohamad. On 18 November 2016, Maria was arrested during a raid on the Bersih office and kept in detention under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 for 10 days. Another member of Bersih, Mandeep Singh, was also arrested and released on bail after two days.
