The Indonesian military should stay out of politics and remain loyal to the government, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said Thursday in an apparent rebuke over contentious statements made by the country’s top general. Military chief commander Gen.Gatot Nurmantyo made a controversial remark at a meeting of retired military generals last month, saying that an institution outside the military tried to import 5,000 illegal weapons “on behalf” of Jokowi. Nurmantyo also instructed military officers to screen a Suharto-era propaganda film depicting the deaths of generals and the crushing of an alleged Communist coup.
