Several people reportedly were killed and hundreds of people were missing after the failure of the Xepian-Xe Namnoy dam in southern Laos. The collapse of the dam, which is part of a larger hydroelectric dam network, has flooded villages and forced thousands of people to flee, according to the NPR, citing local media. The dam collapsed at 8:00 p.m. local time on Monday, releasing 5 billion cubic meters of water and several hundred people are missing after homes were swept away, the Lao News Agency said. Tropical Storm Son-tinh has hit the northern parts of Vietnam and Laos in the coming days. As this storm tracks westward, the greatest risk for flooding and local damaging winds will increase from northern Vietnam and Laos into Thursday, according to AccuWeather.
