The Indonesian unit of Freeport-McMoRan Inc has reopened the main supply route to its huge copper mine in Papua, the company said on Monday, after the road was closed on Sunday following a shooting incident in the area. A state of emergency was declared last week and about 300 additional security forces were deployed to the mining area of the eastern province after a string of shootings since August 17 that killed one police officer and injured six. The UN’s decolonization committee refused to accept in September a petition signed by 1.8 million West Papuans calling for independence, saying West Papua’s cause was outside the committee’s mandate.
