Philippine’s Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Menardo Guevarra has placed three prosecutors under a 60-day preventive suspension after they were identified by President Rodrigo Duterte as among government officials under investigation for alleged corruption. The President recently went on a spree, firing government officials over frequent foreign junkets and other anomalies. He has vowed to bring the anti-corruption crackdown to the local government level. On May 16, Duterte disclosed the names of officials who have been suspended “pending investigation.” Dozens of sports cars and other luxury vehicles worth around £850,000 were destroyed by bulldozers in the Philippines earlier this year, as part of a drive to fight corruption at the country’s customs bureau.
